Thank You, Mr. Obama @ 9:07 AM CST

Thank you, Mr. Obama, for kicking gays and lesbians to the curb.

Again.

Dyed-in-the-wool, tough, intelligent, and brave red-blooded Americans are willing to fight and die for this country and what it stands for. Apparently this willingness is only legitimate, useful or honorable if it comes from a non-gay or non-lesbian American.

Solicitor General Elena Kagan's comment in her brief, that denying openly gay people serving in the military "[is] rationally related to the government's legitimate interest in military discipline and cohesion" makes clear that the willingness of gays and lesbians to fight and die for our country is neither honorable nor wanted if they are also willing to simply be who they are.

I suppose the segregation policy that kept the Tuskegee Airmen from entering officers' clubs and limiting their pilot service to three choices of assignments was considered a "legitimate interest in military discipline and cohesion," too. But at least the government at the time never said to the Tuskegee Airmen, and others of color serving in the military, that "you're not even good enough to die for us."

So thank you, Mr. Obama, for recognizing the importance to the American psyche of ensuring that we will always have at least one type of American to single out as second-class. Thank you for ensuring that, as an "openly" gay person, my rights in this country, my passion for my country, and indeed my life in this country are not nearly so ligitimate as those of my neighbors. In these tough economic times, when so many of us are losing our jobs, our houses, and having difficulty putting food on the table, at least we can turn to each other and say, "Yes, things may be tough. But at least I'm not gay."
